How the quiz works
The fit-score formula
The quiz is a research-backed decision aid. Picks are ranked using a transparent formula — the same formula on every quiz run, no editor's-choice overrides. Each product earns:
- +5 for matching your budget exactly, +2 for one tier above or below.
- +4 when the recipient's age range overlaps the product's manufacturer-listed age fit.
- +2 when the product's category is a documented fit for the occasion (e.g. two-player games for anniversaries, jigsaws for housewarmings).
- +3 per matching interest tag — based on category and on objective keywords in the product's name, brand, verdict, and specs. No hand-tagged personality fluff.
- A small quality boost equal to the product's CurioRank score × 0.05 (so a perfect 100-scoring product earns +5).
How products are selected
Only active catalog products are eligible. Demoted products (rank ≥ 90) and the entries in each category’s Rejection Log are excluded. The catalog is curated independently — see the full per-category CurioRank rubric on the methodology page.
No paid placement
No brand pays to appear in quiz results. No retailer pays for a better position. The formula above is the entire ranking logic.

How does the gift quiz work?+
You answer five questions about who the gift is for — relationship, age, budget, occasion, and 3–5 interests. The quiz scores every product in our catalog against your answers using a transparent fit-score formula (documented below) and surfaces the top six matches. No signup, no email, no waiting.
How are products ranked?+
Each product earns points for matching your budget exactly, fitting the recipient's age range, lining up with the occasion, and matching each of the interests you picked. We add a small quality boost based on the product's CurioRank score so high-quality products edge out near-equivalent picks. We never rank by commission rate.
Is the quiz free?+
Yes. No email required, no account, no paywall. You take the quiz, see the picks, and leave. If you buy something through one of our affiliate links, we earn a small commission — that's how the site is funded.
Do you sell my data?+
There's nothing to sell — the quiz doesn't ask for your email, name, or anything that identifies you. Answers are processed in your browser and never sent to a server.
What if I don't know the recipient's exact age?+
Pick the closest range. The fit-score gives partial credit for adjacent age bands, so being off by a few years isn't a dealbreaker.
Can I retake the quiz with different answers?+
Yes — there's a Retake link on the results page. You can also rerun with a different budget or interest mix to see how the picks shift.
