Every Way to Play Catan Online in 2026, Compared

Searching "play Catan online" returns the same handful of names with no indication of which one is actually Catan, which costs money, and which quietly caps your player count. Here is the landscape, built from each platform's own published data rather than its marketing copy.

Four routes, and they are not interchangeable

Three of those rows say "free" somewhere on their own site. All three mean something different by it, and that difference is the whole decision.

What "free" actually means on each platform

Catan Universe: the download is free, the base game is not

Catan's official app runs on more devices than anything else here. Per the publisher's own FAQ it plays on iOS and Android, in a Chrome or Firefox browser, and on Steam, with one account carrying purchases across all of them.

The pricing is where guides get sloppy. The free tier is a starter scenario, not the base game, and Steam's listing for the app says so outright:

The free tier, per the publisher: Get to know Catan and play the starter scenario in multiplayer mode. Purchase the complete base game, expansions, card game and much more to discover the entire Universe of Catan.

The official FAQ says the same thing in gentler language: the app "can be downloaded and played for free," and buying CATAN Gold unlocks "the expansions, the base game, the Rise of the Inkas and Rivals for CATAN." Read that list again. The base game is on it. Free gets you a starter scenario, not Catan.

One current caveat no evergreen guide will mention: the Catan Universe site is carrying a notice about "limitations with some features" following a backend platform change, plus a server-status warning about impaired service. Check it before building an evening around the app.

Board Game Arena: licensed, polished, Premium-only

Board Game Arena is the answer most forum threads give, and it is a good one, but it is not the free one. BGA publishes a catalogue of every game it hosts, and each entry carries a Premium flag. Catan's says true. What that catalogue records for Catan today:

• Premium members only. A free BGA account cannot start or join a Catan table.
• 3-4 players. No 5-6 player configuration is offered.
• 35 minutes average game length, roughly half a tabletop session.
• 8,541,523 games played all-time, one of the platform's load-bearing titles.
• A built-in tutorial, so nobody at the table has to teach the rules.
• CATAN New Energies is there too, added late 2025, also Premium and also 3-4.

For scale: BGA's catalogue lists 1,348 games, of which 971 are free to play and 377 are Premium-only. Catan sits in the smaller group. "Just play it on BGA" is advice with a subscription attached.

Colonist.io: free, busy, and not Catan

Colonist is what people mean when they say you can play Catan free in a browser, and it is genuinely good. It is also, by its own description, not Catan:

Colonist, in its own words: Colonist.io is an online web game with millions of users. It is a free alternative to the social and strategy board game Settlers of Catan.

"Alternative" is doing real work there. Colonist is an unlicensed implementation of the same core ruleset, which is why it can be free when the licensed products are not. Practically: no Catan artwork, no official expansion names, and no guarantee a rules edge case matches the printed rulebook. In exchange you get instant browser play against bots or humans, casual and ranked ladders, and a room browser busy at essentially any hour. It is ad-supported, with a membership that unlocks all maps and expansions and removes the ads.

Pick the route by what you are actually trying to do

The gap nobody advertises

Here is a claim you can check yourself in about five minutes: there is no free, licensed way to play a full game of Catan online. Every combination fails on one axis.

• Board Game Arena is licensed and free to join, but Catan is behind Premium.
• Catan Universe is licensed and free to install, but the complete base game is a purchase.
• Colonist is free and complete, but it is not licensed Catan.

The 5-6 player case is worse. The official app lists 1-6 players, making it the only licensed route to a six-player online game, and reaching it means buying in. Board Game Arena's version tops out at four. For six people who want the real thing, the honest answer is one purchase, not a clever free workaround.

When the box still wins

Digital Catan solves distance and bookkeeping. It does not solve the reason most people like Catan, which is watching someone's face while they decide whether to trade you the ore. The box wins when:

• Everyone is in the same room. No app improves a table you are already sitting at.
• You want the trading to be loud. Negotiation collapses into a UI dialog online.
• You are teaching kids. Physical cards make the economy visible in a way a screen does not.
• You want it to outlast a platform. The current CATAN 6th Edition box does not depend on anyone's backend migration going well.

Use the digital versions for what they are actually good at: learning the rules cheaply, playing with people who live far away, and getting a 35-minute game in on a weeknight when setting up the board is the thing that would have stopped you.
